The pub with no name

The Royal Oak Pub on the corner of New Road and Brook Road South reopened several months ago but there is no sign or pub name on it.  Why not? Despite the paint job I’m sure many local people don’t even know it’s open.  On the occasions I walk past I rarely see more than a couple in there and one of them is the barman.  Doesn’t seem like a good business move not to advertise the place?I thought there was a proposal to turn it into flats?

Um.. it still has The Royal Oak painted on the wall and a big banner attached to the side saying it is open...

Hi, live in member of staff here for the royal oak, as Mark mentioned it is painted on the wall and we do have a couple large banners (easily around 3m x 1m) stating we are open.As for the old traditional pub sign, we found it had been left outside for over 3 years and the weather has rather badly damaged it.

Lets rename the pub to the RED LION the best pub that was ever in Brentford it was where McDonalds now stands, I met my wife there 50years ago last Monday it was always packed

Yes John it was very Sucessful.It was designed to hold 500 people max in the two bars, withe separate restaurant and servery on the first floor.When it opened its doors on the first night, it exceeded the 500 people so the restaurant had to converted in to another bar with beer crates holding up the collapsible tables to make a temporary bar. The pub never looked back from that day and the restaurant was turned into a normal bar with cameras relaying the band downstairs up to televisions in the bar upstairs.It even made pub of the year in either 71 or 72, the place was a gold mine for fullers.

Apart from match days, how do some of these pubs keep going? Is the Royal Oak packed on a match day? - presumably so - just wondering as I normally only see The Griffin and the one at the other end of Braemar (after living here over 30 years I still don't remember its name). How that pub keeps going I don't know. I often pass by in the evening and there is rarely more than two people in there.
