The Green School

I was disturbed by what I saw outside the Green School this morning at 8.30. Around 200 pupils were lined up along London Road awaiting admittance to the school with no social distancing or face masks.Does the school know what it isn't doing?JL.

The Gumley girls were all crowding out of the school and standing together at the bus stops the other afternoon, no distancing at all.  Our schools need telling.

All schools, including the Green school and Gumley, have bubbles: the kids you saw would have been one year group bubble (as most secondary school appear to have year bubbles), around 120-150 girls in the case of the Green schoo for girls. As you are probably all aware, the 6 people rule is not applicable to schools. Whether secondary school kids are wearing masks in school or not depends on the set up by the school: some schools ask everyone to wear masks only in corridors, some also in classrooms.

I wonder if there is a difference between being in school and the school grounds and being outside school as a pedestrian?  These large groups totally block the pavements as they mix with other people.  Surely the 6 would apply once they leave the school?

Once outside their school, you'd expect 'grown up' pupils to maintain the same safe distancing as the rest of us, ie two metres wherever possible. As others suggest, the school needs to explain this important distinction to their students and the reasons for it. I don't think the 'rule of six' applies, as walking from place to place on the pavement isn't really a 'social gathering', despite many school students regarding it as such.

Well I suppose the 2 metre rule would trump the gathering of 6 as they would be pretty spread out in the numbers they are congregating in.  They tend to walk along in an impenetrable wall on the pavement and the exodus from the school grounds onto the pavement doesn’t give other pedestrians a chance.  What if an elderly person is already on the pavement as they appear?  Needs somebody to let them out slowly onto the public footpaths.

As you suggest, school staff need to supervise the students leaving so they space out, using the same two metre markers they could have on the pavement to queue up by when they come in. And stagger the school day so fewer students arrive and leave at the same time.  Otherwise, breaking up school groups could be a job for a Covid Marshall!
