Burglary TW8

Just for info, I was away for a few days and discovered yesterday that I was burgled. I live opposite The Griffin. They smashed a double glazed french window at the rear, after some tricky climbing over garden fences and exited the same way. Cash, foreign currency and some of my late wife's jewellery stolen. Fortunately my laptops remain, probably as they could not carry them. All a pain in the rear. Police very efficient and insurers too, so far. I thought I was secure! so check on your vulnerability folks!

Brentford and its people in 1928

Since I found this site I have read so much about the town where I was born in 1928. It means quite a lot to me to read how Brentford as changed/grown since my family died-out in 1960's.At one point in it's history it was either owned by the 'Smith's''Luffrum's' and 'Brown's......….Smith's Yard was named of my Aunt'sFather who at one point owned the 'Ligherage' in the area -  and build the cinema Queen's Hall for his two daughters.Part of Brentford Football Ground was built on land that originally belonged to my Grandfather. My Great Grandmother organized a schoolin the Hall next to St. George's Church - for her 12 children and anyother children who cared to attend [but the did have to pay 1 penny a week to cover the cost of the 'slate and pencil' and also to ensure that the really wanted to learn.I started my education at 4yrs. at the 'Bluebird School' Clifton Roadthen on to St.Paul's Church School. Played on the Recreationground - as did my Son when a small child - when we returned to visitthe family......Of course I am 90 years old now but have led a fantastic life - I still work [unpaid of course] in the local churches - have been a Lecturer in the City of London - was in Berlin during the Airlift in 1948.  Even so still retain a great interest in local history - so if I can fill any of Brentford's gaps I would be very happy to help...….I am a published author [Non-fiction]Freddie Montgomery [Mrs]

HEALING IN CHISWICK ON MONDAY

Prolific Murderer - Harold Jones?

Further to the B.B.C. 4 documentary Dark Son - The Hunt for a Serial Killer being broadcast nationally at 9.00 pm on Tuesday February 12.  South Wales Police are actively pursuing forensic opportunities to link Abertillery-born Jones to the murder of 12 year-old Swansea school-girl Muriel Joan Drinkwater, 3 months after he left the army in 1946. A third cold-case team are actively researching Jones' possible involvement in the murder of Ignac Ulycz in Putney in August 1965. See information below from my book "Who Was Jack the Stripper? The Hammersmith Nudes' Murders."(At 10.45 pm on Sunday 15 August 1965, Mr Ignac Ulycz was fatally stabbed outside his own front gate at 323 Upper Richmond Road Putney...........Maddalena Ulycz told the police the assailant was between 50 and 60 years old. (Jones was 59.) Another witness said that the attacker had run around the corner into Colinette Road and just seemed to vanish into thin air. (Jones had been living in 20 Colinette Road.)The Wandsworth Boro' News of Friday 24 September 1965 reported on the inquest into the death of Mr Ulycz.........."The man who killed Mr Ulycz........may have been insane or a psychopath who every now and again feels the desire to attack someone in this way" suggests the Coroner Mr Gavin Thurston.)The fact has now emerged that Jones was living at 20 Colinette Road Putney using the name Harry Stevens while AT THE SAME TIME registered as living at 51 Aldensley Road Hammersmith under the name Harry Jones.

A call to postpone the Brentford Area Forum meeting this evening

Is it possible for someone to get in touch with the organisers and postpone tonight's meeting at the Blue School in Isleworth?It's already icy, the lunchtime news has predicted snowfall, the meeting's in the middle of nowhere, there's no parking and... well, at 7.30 pm we should all be at home and tucked up. Seriously though, the choice of location is supremely peculiar. It will be hell on toast for people to get there. Is there any chance of pulling it and rescheduling in a week or so at a more convenient venue?

Civic Society (Voice) for Brentford

Following some of the threads on this forum there’s clearly dissatisfaction with what’s happening to Brentford and its future. So, rather than just bemoaning the situation here - if you want Brentford to become a successful and attractive place to live, work, spend leisure time or run a business, AND want to encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in the London Borough of Hounslow and Brentford specifically, AND want to stimulate public interest in and care for the history and character of Brentford, AND want to encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general public amenity or historic interest, AND aim is to preserve the best of what we have, and ensure that future buildings make our surroundings even better. THEN, why not become part of a platform for the community to get together and build a local movement for community empowerment of our people as an independent force. Greggs closing Friday

Notice up in Greggs saying they are to close down on Friday. With Evans Cycles gone, that's pretty much all the shops on the south side have now been vacated for demolitoon. Hope Ballymore crack on as there is very little now in Brentford.

Update on Brentford's remodeling

Hey Guys - Does anyone have an update on whats occurring in Brentford across all the various projects that are going on at the moment? The Brentford Today/Brentford TV Facebook group seems to be the only place where everything that matters in terms of the "regeneration" is being posted but unfortunately it feels a bit "National Inquirer"styIe as opposed to concrete official updates. Is there one central place where we can find out a complete summary of what is going on in terms of:- Morrisons and - Brentford High street now that we are without a post office - The Waterman Arts Centre and when its moving- The Old police station and its development- Where there are building works going on, are Historic England involved to preserve this historic locationOne would imagine this website would be the place to summarise all of these and other developments that are occurring. There are lots of rumours and stories going round... I even heard today that they are sizing up St. Paul's recreation park for potential development. I feel incredibly sad that our town, one I have lived in for 20 years now - is literally being demolished with no real joined up plan to make it a special place to live despite the money that has been generated from all of the land sold off and supposed investment in the area. I hear Hounslow High Street is being developed and they have a plan... where's ours?I see Mr Curran has a session on 24th Jan to discuss the population explosion and appealing to us to provide answers to questions that we asked him directly two years ago when the Morrisons and various other sites were being sold off to greedy developers...

Shopping

Today I have been into 4 food shops - two of them major supermarket chains, and have been unable to purchase Pease Pudding. Tesco used to sell it and now have decided not to, neither do they sell packets of Semolina only tins. Not a lot of good when you need Semolina for a cake. I did in the end find that in ASDA, but what about Pease Pudding - they sell faggots which we like, and that's what you traditionally have with faggots. Several enquiries in shops have met with totally blank looks and one person even asked if we were from 'up North'!! Help!

LBH - Please add the Brentford County Court building to the local heritage list

I got a letter through the post from LBH the other day informing me that my house was being added to the local heritage list.  Curious as to which buildings were on the list and the reasons for adding them, I notice that any good example of a particular architectural style and era, or building of local significance can be added.The Brentford County Court building is a perfect example of 1960's modernist civic architecture and demonstrates particularly strong linear forms within a building of strong local significance.  It is perhaps the very best example of such architecture within Hounslow's varied architectural heritage.I think it should be added to the local heritage list and suggest that other people might like to suggest it as well.It appears to have been considered, but discounted probably on the basis it’s going to get knocked down to make way for the god awful block of transient-yuppie rented flats that essential living want to build.You can find the list and the survey in which you add your comments and suggestions at:https://haveyoursay.hounslow.gov.uk/planning-policy/proposed-additions-to-the-local-list/

Another Heathrow consultation

They're playing a numbers game with these consultations; positive responses versus negative ones, so I suggest as many people as possible go the survey and put negative things (or positive if you're that way inclined) in about not wanting planes coming in over us in the middle of the night or showering us in the day with illegal levels of pollution, or the ongoing risk (I believe once every 35 years) of an airliner not making the runway and instead landing in the middle of a built up area.afo.heathrowconsultation.com

Praise for the West Mid.

Unfortunately my youngest son was taken very ill yesterday and as it was a two hour wait for an ambulance and we do live near the hospital we took him in the car straight to A&E.Everyone was absolutely marvellous, and he was treated for several hours in resuc. before being admitted yesterday evening. What with X-rays and CT scans etc. his treatment was nothing less than marvellously efficient and caring.Many thanks to all, doctors, nurses, porters and paramedics who took care of him when we arrived  - and thank Heaven for our brilliant NHS.

No - not the official one - the town centre - from the Bell Rd. junction right round to Lampton Rd. is a bloody disgrace - litter blowing all over the place, bins overflowing. And this leading to the swishy new civic centre  - some advert for the borough  - NOT!
